Improving critical information accessibility through development

  • Software Development

Customer profile

BCN Work closely with EU NAVFOR (Operation Atalanta) to develop a new website to enhance the overall aesthetic, improve the accessibility of information, increase levels of control and management and minimise downtime at all costs. Resulting in enhanced insights for the team to co-ordinate military vessels, organise convoys, and protect maritime trade.

Client summary

The Maritime Security Centre – Horn of Africa (MSCHOA) situated in the OHQ is an initiative established by EU NAVFOR with close co-operation from industry. The MSCHOA provides 24-hour manned monitoring of vessels transiting through the Gulf of Aden, whilst the provision of an interactive website enables the Centre to communicate the latest anti-piracy guidance to industry, and for shipping companies and operators to register their vessels’ movements through the region.

Improved website is a long-established website with over 10,000 users. The last review and refresh had been undertaken over 8 years ago. The site had served its purpose, it was time for change.

The original design was bespoke built for the team within Operation Atalanta, many of whom had long moved on. The content management system (CMS) had become difficult to use and not intuitive with what they wanted it to do. This was the opportunity for BCN Group to deliver a responsive website with the new features needed, make use of a more functional CMS with the scope for growth and future development.

BCN Group worked closely with the team to share the ethos of the look, feel and build of the new website site and make certain the deliverables were in line with the scope.

The results

  • Clean and clear design.
  • Ability to access information required with ease through improved navigation and related links.
  • Fully hosted website by BCN Group reducing cost and time dealing with maintenance and support issues.
  • Increased level of control and management of their own CMS.
  • BCN Group’s outstanding aftercare support and training.

Collaboration tools

With up to 95% of EU Member States’ trade (by volume) transported by sea and between 12.5% and 20% of global trade passing through the Gulf of Aden, EU NAVFOR gives considerable effort to safeguarding trade through this strategic area. The Vessel Registration feature within the EU NAVFOR toolset, designed and delivered by BCN Group is now used to register over 16,000 vessels each month.

Capturing key vessel details, including its cargo, speed and direction allows the EU NAVFOR to co-ordinate military vessels, organise convoys and protect shipping from Somali-based piracy and armed robbery at sea off the Horn of Africa and in the Western Indian Ocean.

The breadth of functionality and collaboration of the tool has provided the necessary cooperative framework that will allow all involved to cooperate effectively with other naval forces and assets deployed in the region.

The IMI’s aim was clear, collaborate with a highly consultative IT partner to take the business forward from a financial reporting perspective. Initially chosen for a Sage 200 support role, a later requirement on analytics – specifically the implementation, visualisation, and surfacing of Sage 200 insights through Power BI – led to BCN working on the complex visualisation project of the IMI’s management accounts.

Transport Focus

Transport Focus ran their email and intranet in an on-premise Exchange and SharePoint 2010 environment. Maintenance and operating costs increased dramatically and due to the complexity of their intranet, users were left frustrated and unwilling to use the system. BCN migrated the business to a new SharePoint site, and developed bespoke SharePoint Online Intranet.
